Lap Infant

While there is no minimum age for infants traveling with us, check with your doctor if you’re unsure your infant should be traveling via plane.

As of their second birthday, children are no longer considered infants. The Federal Aviation Administration requires all children who have reached their second birthday to occupy their own seat and travel on their own ticket.

Each ticketed adult may travel with one lap infant.

Lap infants are not permitted in the emergency exit rows, in the rows immediately in front of or behind any exit row on Alaska Airlines flights 001-1999.

Lap infants are not guaranteed a seat, but if there is an empty seat available on a flight, the infant may occupy that seat for no extra charge.

Children

Alaska strives to seat family members together upon request. If you are unable to obtain seat assignments together for your family, we will make every effort to seat at least one adult with any young child (age 13 and under) from the same party. Please contact us or check with an airport agent as soon as possible to review available seating options.

Identification & Boarding Pass

To add a lap infant request to your reservation, call Alaska Airlines reservations at 1-800-252-7522 with your confirmation code.

Lap infants travel free of charge within the United States.

For more detailed information, visit the airline’s website.

Proof of Age

Alaska Airlines reserves the right to require proof of age for any child passenger. Please be prepared to provide a birth certificate, passport, or other documentation upon request.

International Documentation

Lap infants are subject to select taxes and fees when traveling from an international location into the United States.

Minors traveling internationally are required to have the same passport and visa documentation as adults. If your child is traveling alone, a guardian must complete all international customs forms at check-in.

Minors (under age 18) traveling internationally without one or both parents may be required to present a letter of consent signed by any/all non-traveling parents.

Carry Ons

When traveling with a lap infant, a diaper bag will count toward the standard carry-on limit of the ticketed adult passenger. Lap infants are not entitled to their own carry-on allowance.

To keep infants and children comfortable during travel, we recommend bringing small comfort items in your carry-on bag, such as small snacks, a security blanket, a favorite pillow, small toys, coloring books and crayons and small electronic devices.

The carry-on bag size limit for flights has changed to 22” x 14” x 9” – these dimensions include the wheels and handles. Be sure to measure your bag carefully before you fly.

Personal Items

One small personal item such as a purse, briefcase, or laptop bag, and medically necessary items will be allowed on board for each ticketed person.

Diaper Bags, Pumps, Coolers

When traveling with a lap infant, a diaper bag will count toward the standard carry-on limit of the ticketed adult passenger.

The TSA provides information regarding their liquid limitations for baby formula, breast milk, juice, and other liquids.

Car Seats

We strongly recommend that children, as well as infants traveling on a regular fare, be secured in an appropriate child-restraint system, such as a car seat.

Lap infants sharing a seat with a parent may still sit next to their parent in a car seat if there’s an empty seat available.

We will transport your child’s car seat and stroller free of charge as checked baggage. You can check these items with your other baggage, or wait until you reach the gate area.

To be used onboard, your child-restraint system must bear both of the following labels:

  • This restraint system conforms to all applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards
  • This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft (in red lettering)

Labels that indicate US or foreign government approval or show the seat was manufactured under the standards of the United Nations are also valid.

Find full safety seat requirements on the airline’s website.

Strollers

We will transport your child’s car seat and stroller free of charge as checked baggage. You can check these items with your other baggage, or wait until you reach the gate area.

Additional Gear

In addition to the standard CRS, children who weigh between 22 and 44 pounds and are 40 inches or less may use an Aviation Child Safety Device (ACSD) for added security. Currently the AmSafe CARES Restraint is the only approved ACSD and must bear a label that reads: FAA APPROVED IN ACCORDANCE WITH 14 CFR 21.302(d) APPROVED FOR AIRCRAFT USE ONLY

Pregnancy

No restrictions.
